Minutes of the June 7 2010 Recreation Board Meeting

 

Jeannette Ebert called the meeting to order at 7:34 p.m.

 

Present at the meeting were: Deshan Kortello, Brian Hubic, Melissa Czornobay, Ruth Demetrick,

     Anne Stallard, June How, Kim Grant, Jeannette Ebert, Michelle McKenzie, Bob Lumley

  

           

Additions to the Agenda: Decision on whether to have the Cash Lotto in 2011

 

Minutes from May 3, 2010 meeting:  One omission was noted: Bob Lumley's name was not listed      

  as present and he was at the meeting.   Deshan Kortello moved acceptance of the minutes, seconded

  by Bob Lumley.

 

Financial Report: Kim Grant  reported that the present bank balance is $ 12, 448.64. We have          received our Lotteries money for the year. Kim moved acceptance of the report, seconded by Michelle McKenzie. 

 

Correspondence:

l      some sections of the Lotto follow-up reports were returned with the explanation that they were ineligible. Lottery grants can be used for a maximum of $500  for operating costs (utilities).

       There were enough other receipts to cover the grants this year, but it is to be kept in mind for next year.

Reports:

 

*Management Board:

    Brian Hubic reported that the books are being audited at the moment; the bank balance is roughly

$3338 with $800 for utility bills to come out for this month.

   The furnace in the skating rink (dressing rooms and lobby) is ancient and needs to be replaced. Brian will look after this.

    Brian had prepared a financial statement for the Communiplex showing income and expenses for the last five years.

 

*Norquay School:  Jeannette Ebert reported that:

   -  Graduation was held on May 22nd

   -  Colour Day for Grades 6 – 12 will be held on June 18

   -  Various classes will be going on Field Trips during the next two weeks

   -  June 11 – K to Gr. 6 will have a Fun Day which will be held instead of a Track Meet

   -  Two students, Allison Brass and Dustin Newberg attended the Provincial Track Meet and did well 

 

*Library:  Deshan Kortello reported that Did Abbott, the librarian, has gone for training for the new  provincial library system which will be up and running this Wednesday. The new motto is “One Province – One Card.” All the libraries in the province will be connected and their materials availbable to patrons of any library.

 

* Nice Center:  Anne Stallard reported that the usual activities continue at the Center. They have rented out the facility several times in the last month for other events.

 

*Chamber of Commerce:  June How reported that their meeting was held on May 18.

  The Co-op donated lumber for 5 new picnic tables for the parks; they will be built by Kin Club volunteers at Don Tower's shop.

  School students have agreed to paint the gazebo in the Bell Park.

  Donna Lumley will get a student to cut the grass at the park for 15 weeks.

  Discussion was held about the upcoming 100th Anniversary of Norquay in 2012.

   

*Horticulture:  Deshan Kortello reported that the group will  hold their annual Horticultural Show on August 18th.

 

*Ukrainian Dancing:  Michelle McKenzie reported that the club is looking for a new instructor for the coming year.

 

*Health Auxillary:  Kim Grant reported that they will hold a Bake Sale in October and the ladies have been working on a quilt which will be a raffle prize at that event.

 

 

*Tail Twisters:  Ruth Demetrick reported that the 4-H Trail Ride on May 9th went very well. The weather was just right for riding and there were about 50 riders and 1 wagon.

  On May 13th, the members did highway clean-up – 14 km. along highway #8.

  The club members have been riding at Naclia's arena with instructors Margaret Prekaski, Tori Jepson, and Sandy Assman.

  Ruth Demetrick, Calli Holodniuk and Monika Schneeberger represented the club at Canora to help distribute PFRA trees.

  Achievement Day is scheduled for Saturday, June 26, at Naclia's Arena, starting at 9:00 a.m. Everyone is welcome to come and watch  club members demonstrate their riding skills and show off their leather projects and 4-H record books. These things will all be judged that day.

  

*Norquay Playschool:  Melissa Czornobay reported that Playschool had their year-end party on May 26th, so they are done for the year.

  Registration will be in September.

 

 

 

New Business:

    Updating the membership: communication with inactive groups- Communication Services and Dance Boosters – has indicated that these groups no longer wish to be part of the Rec Board. The Dance Boosters has disbanded, but said they purchased flooring and mirrors for the dance studio that are now the property of the Rec Board . There is some extra flooring that they need storage space for.

  Town Council will be approached to remove their names as part of the Rec Board.

Rec Board Lotto:  Last year we sold 833 tickets, this year we have sold 750. Discussion followed – it was felt that more effort is needed to sell more tickets, especially by some groups. After Jeannette Ebert volunteered to do the vast amount of bookeeping required for another year, it was:

  Moved by Brian Hubic, seconded by Ruth Demetrick that we have a Rec Board Lottery in 2011.

Carried.

 

Next meeting will be Monday, Sept. 13th  at 7:30 at the Town Office.
